Quick answer
How do you calculate PayPal fees?
PayPal fee = amount × rate + fixed fee. For PayPal Checkout in the US the rate is 3.49% and the fixed fee $0.49, so a $100 payment costs $3.49 + $0.49 = $3.98 and you receive $96.02. A buyer outside the US adds 1.5%, making it $5.48. Goods and services payments are 2.99% with no fixed fee.
How to use the PayPal fee calculator
- Pick a mode
Fee on an amount shows what PayPal takes from a payment. Amount to charge works backwards from what you want to receive.
- Choose the payment type
PayPal Checkout for most online sales, goods and services for a payment sent from a PayPal account, or the card, invoice, Pay Later, micropayment or QR code rate.
- Set where the buyer is
A buyer outside the US adds 1.5%. Pick the currency you receive, and switch on conversion if PayPal turns it into USD.
- Compare and share

How PayPal fees work
For a US seller, PayPal charges a percentage of each payment plus a fixed fee set by the currency you receive. PayPal Checkout, Guest Checkout and Venmo cost 3.49% + $0.49. Standard card payments cost 2.99% + $0.49 and advanced card payments 2.89% + $0.29. A goods and services payment sent from a PayPal account costs 2.99% with no fixed fee.
When the buyer is registered in another country, PayPal adds 1.50% to the domestic rate. If you receive a currency other than USD, the fixed fee is the one for that currency, such as €0.39 or £0.39, and converting the money into USD costs PayPal’s 3% spread, built into its exchange rate.
Buyers pay nothing to pay with PayPal unless a currency conversion is involved: the seller pays the fee. To receive an exact amount, divide the target plus the fixed fee by one minus the rate. These are US rates; PayPal publishes a separate schedule for each country.
PayPal fee = amount × (rate + 1.5% if international) + fixed fee
You receive = amount − PayPal fee
Amount to charge = (target + fixed fee) ÷ (1 − rate)Worked example
- A $100 PayPal Checkout payment from a US buyer.
- Percentage fee: $100 × 3.49% = $3.49.
- Fixed fee in USD: $0.49. Total fee: $3.49 + $0.49 = $3.98.
- You receive $100 − $3.98 = $96.02. From a buyer outside the US: + $1.50, so $5.48.
- To receive exactly $100: ($100 + $0.49) ÷ (1 − 0.0349) = $104.13. Stripe would take $3.20 on the same $100.

PayPal vs Stripe fees
On a $100 US card payment, Stripe takes $3.20 (2.9% + 30¢), PayPal Checkout $3.98 and PayPal’s standard card rate $3.48 (2.99% + $0.49). Both add 1.5% for international payments, though Stripe’s applies to cards issued outside the US and PayPal’s to buyers registered in another country. Offering both lets each buyer pay the way they prefer.
How to pay less in PayPal fees
Card buyers cost less through advanced card payments (2.89% + $0.29) than through standard card payments (2.99% + $0.49). For small payments, micropayment pricing (4.99% + $0.09) beats PayPal Checkout below about $26.67, where both cost $1.42, and costs more above it; you apply for it per account. Pricing in USD for US buyers avoids the 3% conversion spread.
