AI directories work differently from general startup directories. People search them by task ("remove the background from a video"), not by brand. Most of the big ones now charge a review fee, and many of the free ones only list you in exchange for a link back.
If your product isn’t mainly AI, start with the general SaaS directory list.
Where to list an AI tool first

How to get an AI tool accepted
- Name the job, not the model Visitors search by task. "Writes cold emails from a LinkedIn profile" gets found; "AI productivity tool" doesn’t. Pick the most specific category the directory offers.
- Show real output A screenshot of an actual result, or a 30-to-60-second clip. Curated sites open the product before they list it: a broken demo, a login wall with no free tier or a thin chatbot wrapper gets rejected, and you rarely get a second review.
- Say what’s free Most AI directories filter by free, freemium and paid. State which you are and what the free tier includes, or you get filed wrong.
- Use one name and one URL everywhere Mismatched names split your listings, and nobody can tell they are the same product.
- Check the link once you’re live Several AI directories route outbound links through a redirect, or add nofollow after approval. Inspect the live listing before you count it as a backlink.
- Skip "guaranteed AI citation" packages Nobody can guarantee that ChatGPT or Claude will recommend you. Those packages are bulk submissions to template directories.

How to get your AI tool cited in AI answers
ChatGPT search, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews search the web before they answer and cite the pages they used, mostly pages that already rank for the question. Without search, a model answers from its training data, which comes from the same public web. You cannot submit your tool to any of them. You can get it listed on the pages they read.
Where those answers come from
The big AI catalogs
Their category and task pages are built around the questions people put to an assistant, such as the best AI tool for a given job. A listing puts your product on those pages.
Software review sites
For business software, G2, Capterra and TrustRadius rank for "best [category] software" searches, so they are among the results these engines read. Reviews from real customers are what fill your profile there.
Alternatives and comparison pages
SaaSHub and AlternativeTo rank for "[tool] alternatives". When someone asks an assistant for an alternative to a known product, these pages answer the same question in search.
Community threads
Reddit and Hacker News threads where people recommend tools often rank for "what do you use for X" searches. A useful reply from you in a relevant thread is part of what gets read. A dropped link gets removed.
What helps
- Use one name, one category and one description everywhere. When every listing says the same thing, they read as one product.
- Name the task. People ask for a tool that does a specific job. "Writes cold emails from a LinkedIn profile" matches that question; "AI productivity platform" matches nothing.
- Let the crawlers in. If your robots.txt blocks OAI-SearchBot or PerplexityBot, ChatGPT search and Perplexity cannot read your site. Google AI Overviews use the regular Googlebot crawl.
- Keep your own pages plain. A homepage that says what the product does, a public pricing page and docs outside the login give these engines something to quote.
None of this guarantees a citation. It puts your product on the pages these engines read.

- Are AI directories still worth submitting to?
- A handful are. The big catalogs send people who are looking for a tool for a specific task, and a few free directories still pass a followed link. Most of the long tail are template sites that exist to sell featured slots and send nobody. Ten good ones beat a hundred.
- Which AI directories are free?
- 135 of the 371 AI directories we track list a free submission, and 89 of those give a dofollow link. Among the hand-picked ones, ToolPilot.ai, ShowMeBest.ai, The Rundown tools and AI Tools Directory have a free route with a followed link. Most free routes ask for a badge or a link back, and the big catalogs have all gone paid.
- Why do so many AI directories want a badge on my site?
- A link back is how they grow their own authority. It is a reciprocal link: fine for the few directories you actually value, a bad trade if you would end up with twenty badges in your footer. SaaSCity asks for one too; Quick Pass skips it.
- My SaaS has an AI feature. Should it go on AI directories?
- Only if the AI part is what people would search for. If AI is one feature among many, the general SaaS directories will do more for you. AI directory visitors bounce when they find a CRM with a summary button.
