Launching a mobile app here

Give the app a web page of its own, even a single one. Sending every visitor straight to an App Store listing costs you the thing a launch is for: a page you control, that describes the product properly, and that a link can point at. Store listings are optimised for store search, not for someone deciding whether to care.

Screenshots do the selling. Use ones that show the app holding real content rather than an empty first-run state, and pick the three screens that explain the app rather than the three that look best. A visitor is deciding whether to spend two minutes installing something, and an empty dashboard is not an argument.

Say what the app costs before the download. Free with a subscription behind onboarding is the most common pattern and also the most resented one, and people who find out at the paywall leave one-star reviews about it. Naming the price in the description sends fewer people to the store, and the ones who arrive are the ones who were going to pay.

What a strong mobile listing includes

  • A web page for the app, not only a store link
  • Both store links when both platforms exist, and a note when one is missing
  • Screenshots with real content in them
  • The pricing model, including what the free tier really includes

Questions founders ask about Mobile Apps

Can I list an app that is still in TestFlight?

Yes, as long as someone can join the build. Say it is a beta in the description so nobody is surprised by a public link that leads to a closed test.

Does a listing help App Store ranking?

Not directly, since App Store search does not read your backlinks. It helps the web page that ranks for your app name, which is what people find when they search you outside the store.
