Quick answer
How does X (Twitter) count characters?
X counts a weighted length with a 280 limit, from its twitter-text rules: most Latin characters count 1; CJK, emoji (even a whole family sequence) and most other scripts count 2; every link counts 23, however long it is. Example: “Hello 🚀 https://example.com” is 6 + 2 + 1 + 23 = 32.
How to use the character counter
- Paste your copy
A post, a tagline, an app description or a meta tag. One box checks every field at once.
- Filter the limits
Show social networks, launch sites, app stores or search, or all 28.
- Read each row
Count against the limit, characters left, and a note on how that platform counts. Red means over.
- Check the search preview
For titles and meta descriptions, the preview cuts your text where a desktop result would, by estimated pixel width.
How each platform counts
Most limits count characters. X does not: it normalises the text, then weighs each character with twitter-text’s v3 table. Code points U+0000 to U+10FF and a few punctuation ranges weigh 1, everything else 2, a whole emoji sequence 2, and each link 23. Links typed without https:// count too; this counter recognises common domain endings.
Bluesky counts graphemes, the characters you see, so an emoji family is 1. Threads counts characters but each emoji as its UTF-8 bytes, per Meta’s docs. Apple’s App Store keyword field allows 100 bytes, so accented letters take 2. SaaSCity counts JavaScript string length, the same as its submission API.
Google sets no character limit on titles or meta descriptions; it cuts them to fit the screen. So those two rows measure the rendered width in your browser (20px Arial for titles, 14px for descriptions) against about 600 px and 920 px, the desktop widths Ahrefs and Yoast use. Treat them as estimates.
X weight = Σ characters (1 if in U+0000–10FF, U+2000–200D, U+2010–201F, U+2032–2037, else 2) + 2 per emoji + 23 per link
Limit: 280Worked example
- Text: “Ledgerly sends invoices from your tracked hours and chases late payments for you. Free for up to three clients, €9 a month after that. 🚀”
- Characters: 136 code points.
- X weighted length: 134 characters at weight 1 + € at 2 + 🚀 at 2 = 138 of 280.
- Product Hunt tagline: 136 of 60, so 76 over: too long for a tagline.
- Google Play short description: 136 of 80, 56 over. It fits LinkedIn, Threads and SaaSCity’s description field.

Last verified October 27, 2026. SaaSCity’s limits come from its submission API. The two pixel rows are estimates: Google publishes no limit.
How long should a meta description be?
Google sets no maximum: “There’s no limit on how long a meta description can be,” its Search Central docs say, but the snippet is cut to fit the device. Third-party measurements put the desktop cut near 920 px, about 155 to 160 characters, and mobile near 680 px. Put the point of the page in the first 120 characters so it survives on a phone.
Meta title length
The same holds for titles: no limit, cut to the screen. SEO tools measure about 600 px at 20px Arial on desktop, roughly 50 to 60 characters; wide letters such as W and M use the space faster than i and l, which is why the counter measures pixels. Lead with the words people search for.
Character limit questions
- What is the character limit on X (Twitter)?
- 280 weighted characters for a standard post. Links count 23 each, emoji and CJK characters count 2, most Latin characters count 1.
- Do links count toward the Twitter character limit?
- Yes, as 23 characters each, whatever their length, because X wraps every link in its t.co shortener. A domain typed without https://, such as example.com, counts 23 too.
- How many characters is an emoji on X?
- Two. A whole emoji sequence, such as a family or a skin-tone variant, counts as one emoji, so 2 in total.
- What is the ideal meta description length?
- Google has no limit and trims to fit the screen. Aim for about 155 to 160 characters on desktop and keep the key point in the first 120, which is roughly where mobile results cut.
- How do I check my meta description length?
- Paste it above. The meta description row measures its width in pixels against about 920 px, and the preview shows where a desktop result would cut it.
- When does LinkedIn show “see more”?
- LinkedIn does not publish it. Third-party measurements put the cut near 210 characters on desktop and 140 on mobile, so the counter shows what falls before about 210, labelled approximate.
- How long can a Product Hunt tagline be?
- 60 characters. Product Hunt’s help pages give the description 260 characters, while its launch prep page says 500; 260 is the safe cap.
- Why are App Store keywords counted in bytes?
- Apple’s App Store Connect Help allows “up to 100 bytes”. ASCII letters take one byte each, but accented letters take two and CJK characters three, so a keyword list in another language fits fewer characters.
- What are SaaSCity’s tagline and description limits?
- A tagline of 10 to 100 characters and a description of 50 to 5,000, the limits SaaSCity’s submission API enforces. Product names run 3 to 60 characters.
