Quick answer

What is the Twitter header size?

X recommends 1500 × 500 px (3:1) for the header, as JPG, PNG or a still GIF. X notes that up to 60 px at the top and bottom can be cropped depending on the screen, and your profile photo covers the lower left. A 2400 × 1600 photo gives a 2400 × 800 crop, scaled by 0.625 to 1500 × 500.

How to make an X header

  1. Add your image

JPEG, PNG or WebP up to 20 MB. At least 1500 px wide keeps it sharp.

  2. Place the focal point

Drag the marker onto what must stay visible; the 3:1 crop centres on it.

  3. Check the safe zones

Red strips are the 60 px X may cut; the dark circle is the profile photo. Keep text out of both.

  4. Download and upload

Save the file, then on X open Edit profile, click the camera on the header and upload it.

How the header is cropped

A 1500 × 500 header is three times as wide as it is tall. The resizer takes the widest 3:1 strip of your image, centred on your focal point, and scales it to exactly 1500 × 500.

X’s help centre says that at the recommended size, 60 px at the top and bottom could be cropped, depending on the monitor and browser. That leaves 1500 × 380 that always shows. X gives no measurement for the profile photo, so that circle is our estimate.

Formula
crop height = image width × 500 ÷ 1500 (when the image is less than 3:1) always visible: 1500 × (500 − 2 × 60) = 1500 × 380 scale = 1500 ÷ crop width

Worked example

  1. A 2,400 × 1,600 photo for the 1500 × 500 header.
  2. Crop height: 2,400 × 500 ÷ 1,500 = 800 px, so the crop is 2,400 × 800.
  3. Focal point halfway down: top edge at 800 − 400 = 400 px.
  4. Scale: 1,500 ÷ 2,400 = 0.625.
  5. Safe band: 60 px off the top and bottom leaves rows 60 to 440 of the header.

The 60 px X may crop

X says a header at 1500 × 500 can lose about 60 px at the top and at the bottom on some monitors and browsers. Treat rows 60 to 440 as the part that always shows, and keep text and logos inside that band.

Where the profile photo sits

Your round profile photo overlaps the bottom-left of the header, on the web and in the app. Anything in that corner is hidden, so move the subject to the centre or right. The profile photo itself is 400 × 400 px, JPEG, PNG or GIF up to 2 MB.

What to put on a startup’s X header

Say what you build in one short line, on the right half, inside the safe band. A product screenshot or the launch date works well; a busy collage does not at this size. Keep type large: the header shows at a fraction of its width on phones.

X header questions

What size is a Twitter header?
1500 × 500 pixels, a 3:1 ratio. X calls it the header photo or banner, and accepts JPG, PNG or GIF, but not animated GIFs.
Why is my Twitter header cropped?
X says up to 60 pixels at the top and bottom can be cropped depending on the monitor and browser, and the profile photo covers the lower left. Keep key content in the middle band.
Is the X banner size the same as the Twitter header size?
Yes. The header photo, also called the banner, is 1500 × 500 pixels on X, as it was on Twitter.
Can my X header be a GIF?
Only a still one. X accepts GIF files for the header but does not support animated GIFs for profile or header images.
What size is the X profile picture?
400 × 400 pixels, JPEG, PNG or GIF, up to 2 MB. It is usually shown as a circle.
What size is a Twitter post image?
X shows single images between 2:1 and 3:4 in full. Its ad specs list 1920 × 1080 for 16:9 and 1440 × 1800 for 4:5. Photos can be up to 5 MB.
Why does my header look blurry?
The image was probably smaller than 1500 px wide and got enlarged. The resizer flags upscaling; start from a larger original.
Is my image uploaded anywhere?
No. Cropping and downloading happen in your browser, and the image never leaves your device.
