Directory submission: what it still does for a SaaS in 2026

Directory submission used to mean filing your site in a few big web directories. For a SaaS in 2026 it means getting listed where buyers, makers and AI answers look for products, and skipping the hundreds of sites that exist only to collect links.

What is directory submission?

Directory submission is listing your product on sites that catalog products: launch platforms, software directories, review sites and niche lists. A good listing is a page people browse and Google indexes, sometimes with a followed link to you. Links from low-quality directories are one of the examples of link spam in Google's spam policies.

Also called: directory listing, submit to directories

What directory submission means today

It means getting your product listed on the sites where people look for software. Four kinds matter for a SaaS in 2026:

  • Launch platforms, where a product launches on a set day and competes for votes, such as Product Hunt and its alternatives.
  • Software directories and alternatives sites, where people browse a category or look for a replacement for a tool they use.
  • Review sites such as G2 and Capterra, where buyers read what users say before they shortlist a product.
  • Niche lists: AI tool directories, MCP server registries, GitHub awesome lists and directories for one industry or platform.

Where the old web directories went

The general web directories of the 2000s tried to file the whole web into categories. As of October 2026 the DMOZ domain no longer loads (its editors continue the directory as Curlie, which by its own account launched in 2017), and dir.yahoo.com redirects to Yahoo Local. Our 2026 study shows what took their place: of the 1,666 working directories we kept, general directories lead (508), followed by AI tool directories (371), software discovery sites (214) and launch platforms (127).

What it does for SEO

A good listing does four things, and only the first depends on the link being followed. Our SEO benefits guide covers each one in detail:

  • A followed link from an indexed page, which counts toward your link profile.
  • A page that can rank for your product's name, next to your own site.
  • Referral visits from people comparing tools.
  • A third-party description of your product that AI answers can cite.

Start with a listing you can check

SaaSCity, the launch directory we run, reviews every listing by hand and gives it a permanent page and a launch week on a DR 66 domain. A free listing’s link turns dofollow once our badge is on your homepage. If you would rather not fill in fifty forms yourself, our submission service does them and reports every live URL.

What it does not do

It will not rank you on its own. Links are one signal among many, and Google's systems are built to discount links that exist only to pass ranking credit. In December 2022 Google said its AI-based SpamBrain system can now detect "sites used for the purpose of passing outgoing links" and neutralize the unnatural links they give, so any credit those links passed is lost.

It usually will not hurt you either. Google says that in most cases it can work out which links to trust without help, and that most sites will never need its disavow tool. The usual cost of a weak directory is the time you spent on its form.

And a higher Domain Rating is not the goal. DR is Ahrefs' metric, not Google's, and it can rise from links that do nothing for your traffic. Our guide to Domain Rating explains what it measures and what it misses.

Google's rule on low-quality directories

Google's spam policies name "low-quality directory or bookmark site links" as an example of link spam, which they define as creating links to or from a site primarily to manipulate search rankings. The policy page was last updated on August 28, 2026.

The policy does not say what makes a directory low quality, so this is the test we use: a directory is worth a submission when people use it to find products and the link is a side effect of a listing someone might read. When the link is the product, walk away. A useful directory shows most of these signs:

  • Someone reviews submissions, and some get turned down.
  • Listings have descriptions a person wrote, in categories that make sense.
  • New listings keep arriving, and they get votes, comments, reviews or clicks.
  • Listing pages show up in Google: search site: plus the directory's domain and a product name.
  • Nothing on the site sells guest posts or link insertions, and casinos are not listed next to roofers next to your SaaS.

Google's spam policies list low-quality directory links as link spam (page last updated August 28, 2026).

What our study found

We checked 2,972 domains from a raw SaaS directory list. 193 of them were link farms and spam, with a median Domain Rating of 0, and 25 of those were still labeled dofollow on the lists they came from. In all, 1,306 (44%) were not worth a submission.

How many directories to submit to

Ten to fifteen well-chosen listings do most of the work for search, and more are worth adding only when each one reaches people who might use your product. There is no number Google rewards.

Our SEO benefits guide makes the case for ten to fifteen: the big review and alternatives sites plus two or three directories in your niche. Past that, the returns are visitors and coverage, not rankings.

If you want more reach, start from the short list in our study: 56 directories are free, dofollow and DR 70 or higher, and 127 are free, dofollow and DR 50 or higher. Our dataset currently counts 419 free directories with a followed link. Past those, pick by audience fit, not by DR.

Budget the time. By our estimate, one submission by hand takes about 12 minutes once your copy is ready, so 50 directories is about 10 hours. Spread them over a few weeks so you can answer reviews and fix listings as they go live.

Doing it yourself or paying a service

Do it yourself if you have the hours and want control of every listing; pay a service if your time is worth more than the fee. Either way, nobody can promise you a listing, a followed link or a ranking, because each directory decides.

By hand, the cost is time: about 12 minutes per submission by our estimate, plus writing your copy once and keeping logins and listing URLs in one place. In return you choose every directory, every account uses your own email and you can edit each listing later.

A service sells the form-filling. Our comparison of the main services, rechecked on October 5, 2026, lays out what each one costs and delivers. We sell one too, so weigh this paragraph accordingly: as of October 2026 ours costs $49 for 50 directories, $99 for 100 or $179 for 150, one-time, and every order ends with a report of each submission and live URL. It promises no listing, link or ranking change.

Before you pay any service, ask for:

  • The list of directories, so you can check a few against the tests above.
  • A sample report, to see whether you get live listing URLs or only a "submitted" status.
  • Whose email the directory accounts use, since that decides who can edit the listings later.
  • What happens when a directory rejects you or never replies.

How to track your submissions

Keep one row per directory and recheck it every quarter. A tracker tells you which listings went live, which links are followed and which listings send anyone.

What to record for each directory
FieldWhy it matters
Date submittedMany directories review by hand, and some never reply.
Status and listing URLA submission is not a listing until the page is live.
Link rel valueChecked on the live page: followed, nofollow, sponsored, ugc or a redirect (how to check).
IndexedA listing page Google has not indexed does nothing for your name in search.
Robots and canonicalA noindex keeps the listing out of Google; a canonical pointing elsewhere asks Google to index another URL.
UTM-tagged URLWithout it, visits from listings with noreferrer can show up as direct traffic.
Referral visits per monthThe number that tells you whether a listing earns its place.
Next checkDirectories change link policies and go offline without notice.

What Search Console can and cannot tell you

Its Links report shows a sample of the links Google has found to your site, grouped by root domain, and Google says the report does not specify whether a link is marked nofollow. Use it to confirm Google has seen a listing, and check the rel value on the page itself. Recheck the rest on a schedule: in our study, 104 dead or broken sites were still labeled dofollow on the lists they came from.

Directory submission: FAQ

What is directory submission in SEO?
Listing your website or product on directories so that people and search engines find it there. For a SaaS in 2026 the useful ones are launch platforms, software and alternatives directories, review sites and niche lists.
Is directory submission still worth it in 2026?
Selectively, yes. A few well-chosen listings bring visitors, a page that ranks for your name and sometimes a followed link. Hundreds of low-quality directories bring mostly nothing, and Google lists links from them as link spam.
Can directory submission hurt my site?
Rarely. Google says it can usually tell which links to trust without help, so weak directory links tend to be ignored. Buying links for ranking purposes or using automated programs to create links is different: both are link spam under Google's policies and can lead to a manual action.
How many directories should I submit to?
Ten to fifteen well-chosen ones cover most of the SEO benefit. Add more only when each one reaches people who might use your product.
Are directory submission services worth it?
They are worth it when your hours cost more than the fee. A service saves form-filling; it cannot promise listings, followed links or rankings. Ask for the directory list and a sample report before you pay.
How long does directory submission take?
About 12 minutes per directory by hand, by our estimate, once your description, logo and screenshots are ready, so 50 directories is roughly 10 hours. Approval on the directory's side can take much longer.
